Rubicon Games News ArchiveSince many Everway fans visited the Rubicon Games web site when they owned the Everway product line, we have included a copy of the news archive from their defunct web site for reference purposes. Gaslight Press does not endorse the content of this page in any way nor guarantee that it will uphold any promises or announcements made herein, since the comments included in this page were made by a different company - it is included for historical continuity only. April 11, 2001Rubicon Games and the entire Everway line has been sold to Gaslight Press. More news to follow soon! February 7, 2001What's this? Another Arcana entry so soon? We'll let you know when we find out what the catch is. Please check out Erik Amundsen's Element Toads --a Creature Story for Everway. January 31, 2001Today we have for you the final installment of Mark Edwards' Spherewalker Origins series in Arcana: Walker's Footsteps. We have some rather sad company news to report: Games & Gizmos' Seattle and Bellevue locations are no more. The Redmond Games & Gizmos store will still serve the Seattle-area gaming community, providing the very best in events, classes, open play gaming, and games, games, games. GamesAndGizmos.com currently only has Everway supplements and the modern urban fantasy RPG Earth & Sky available for sale, as we reevaluate our online business model. November 12, 2000At long last, we bring you the second installment of what really is Mark Edwards' three-part Spherewalker Origins series. Demons would have made a great Halloween Arcana article, but we'll have to settle for a mid-November article. Our fault, not Mark's. Later this month this site will probably suffer downtime of between 24 and 48 hours, as we move our servers to a different facility and the Internet spends some time figuring out where their new location is. We'll keep you posted. April 21, 2000Please visit Arcana today to read The Mudbank Sacrifice, a Mudbank Family legend by Alan Schwartz. April 6, 2000Today we have a really cool Everway Family Legend by Paul King--The Shepherd Mages, a legend of the Crookstaff Family. March 29, 2000Notice anything different? Hopefully not, but today we successfully moved RubiconGames.com from our ISP to our own in-house servers. So far the only complication is that our feedback form is under the weather. Just drop us a line at custserv@rubicongames.com if you have something to say. March 21, 2000 (Aries 1, 1000)Well, it's finally the day--Y1K has arrived to the ancient city of Everway. So far, so good: no major catastrophes, no rioting, no looting, no magic outages. In fact, all is well in the city. We'll let you know if the dragons regain their powers or the gates all collapse. March 17, 2000Happy Saint Patrick's Day! March 10, 2000We're the proud new hosts of the Everway Family Legends Project, in which the great families of the ancient city each tell how they saved Everway and brought it to greatness. Our first legend is the brand-new tale of How Snakering Drove The Serpents Into Shimmermoon Bay, by Rob Barrett. February 28, 2000Well, we finally have a new Arcanum up! Oranda's Flame was written by Elizabeth Mathews, one of our Apprentices, and is the background story of her hero Oranda. We'll be updating it in the next couple days with stats and Vision Card images. February 10, 2000We have a new Arcanum by Apprentice Elizabeth, but it won't be up until next week. We're still looking for more submissions to Arcana. Just email michaelc@rubicongames.com if you have an article to submit. February 2, 2000Happy Groundhog Day from Rubicon Games and Games & Gizmos! Okay, so it's not that exciting a holiday, but the poor little critter never gets much press. February 1, 2000It's a CONspiracy! February 11 - 13 Webmaster Evan Sass (that's me) is going to be up in Mission, B.C., Canada at CONspiracy at the Best Western Mission City Lodge. We're not going to have a booth or anything, but if you track me down I'll have a few of each of our products you can buy, and the Strangerside manuscript or a pre-release version for you to check out. This year's CONspiracy features Pagan Publishing's John Tynes, Serendipity Circle's Julie Hoverson, and Steve Miller of TSR. There's also going to be a Darkest of the Hillside Thickets concert on Friday night--what ghoulish fun! For info you can call 1-888-21-GAMES. January 19, 2000Okay, we admit it--we started teasing you about Strangerside a little bit too early. We honestly were once on schedule to release the book on Halloween of 1999, but many things got in the way, and we fell way behind. January 17, 2000Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! It's sunny in Seattle today. Could this be the end of the world? Or merely a residual Y2K bug? It's still the year 999 in the City of Everway, until Aries 1 (our March 21), anyway; maybe they'll have some Y1K disasters worth writing about. And speaking of Everway, remember that we're always looking for Arcana submissions in all of the different categories. Our pool of available Arcanum is small right now, but we'll get something new up soon, honest! Anybody want to move to Seattle and fill Web orders (for free)? January 4, 2000Happy New Year from all of us at Rubicon Games and Games & Gizmos! December 22, 1999Please check out Ken Hite's "Out of the Box" column today in Mania Magazine, online on anotheruniverse.com--he lists Everway at #10 of The Best RPGs Of All Time, Which Is To Say, The Last 25 Years. December 20, 1999New in Arcana this week (and our last Arcanum for 1999) you'll find Battleflies, a creature for Everway featuring brand-new color art by Gerry Grace and a story by Strangerside author Mark Edwards. December 6, 1999In the latest Pyramid Magazine from Steve Jackson Games, editor Scott D. Haring lists Everway among the top ten roleplaying games of the millenium. (Aw, shucks! We would have been happy enough seeing Everway among the top ten RPGs in the past 30 years...) Pyramid is well worth the subscription price, and they didn't even pay us to say that! December 3, 1999As the acrid smell of tear gas dissipates in the cold Seattle morning, the peaceful protestors, brainless rioters, nervous WTO members, and the National Guard return whence they came, leaving the erstwhile beautiful core of the city a shambles... But we have news that is entirely unrelated to WTO Smackdown madness--we are proud to announce the fiftieth article in Arcana, our free Everway support area on RubiconGames.com. The Motley by Strangerside author Mark Edwards, centers around a family from Everway and Strangerside. November 18, 1999New in Arcana today is Word of Fire, a school of magic for Everway by Marco Cottone in Italy. November 17, 1999Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay, but we've been working very insane hours to relaunch our online store at http://www.gamesandgizmos.com/. It's now officially back up, as of about 3am today, so we can return to our regularly scheduled work life. Very soon Arcana will sport a new article by Marco Cottone of Italy--the week after that, we'll post the fiftieth Arcana article (by Strangerside author Mark Edwards) for your enjoyment. And as for Strangerside, we are still working on it, and it will still be available in the next few weeks. November 7, 1999Please join our new online Everway discussion group sponsored by onelist.com. It has both Web and email-based messaging, space for Everway-related uploads and downloads, and there's even a survey so you can let us know what you think of the new Everway-L! October 29, 1999Arcana now features The Library of All Worlds--An Overview by Paul King. October 22, 1999We're working on the next Arcana update, an article by Paul King about The Library of All Worlds. In the meantime, we're proud to announce the Strangerside Sneak Preview! October 13, 1999Our newest offering in Arcana is The Bookstore of All Worlds, a new resource page for Everway. It's a list of inspiring books recommended by Everway players and gamemasters, and you can just click on most of them to buy them on Amazon.com. We'll be adding more books soon (we already have a big list to add). October 7, 1999Today we have a new Arcana offering from John "Seanchaí" Grose: Courtean Wizardry, a school of magic for Everway. October 1, 1999Happy October! Today's issue of Steve Jackson Games' Pyramid Magazine features an article called "Cyberway: Bringing High-Tech to Everway" by Kingsley Lintz. It features some cool futuristic art by andi jones, and has some really cool concepts regarding sci-fi Everway. If you're not a subscriber already, you should check Pyramid out--it's always full of news, reviews, articles about games, and even comics by John Kovalic! September 29, 1999Please check out the Everway page--we've updated our list of Everway links and added a downloadable Everway Hero Sheet PDF. September 15, 1999This week in Arcana, Craig Russell brings us a new Everway quest, O, For a Voice Like Thunder. Sure, Everway heroes avert wars all the time--but you try doing it when no one will tell you what the fight's about! August 27, 1999New in Arcana today you'll find The Wheels, a people for Everway by Strangerside author Mark Edwards. August 26, 1999If you're in the Pacific Northwest, come see Rubicon Games and Games & Gizmos at Dragonflight at Seattle University, from August 27th through the 29th. Our Games & Gizmos Rangers are running all of the collectible card game events (Star Trek, Star Wars, Magic, Doomtown, L5R...) along with Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Clan Wars, and Cheapass Games like Button Men (we've also got SNEAK PREVIEW demo copies of a new game from Cheapass called Brawl--this game redefines fast furious fun, and it won't actually enter distribution until Labor Day!). Of course, we'll also be there running Everway quests and a special event called Everway Arena--check your save-the-world feel-good motives at the door and come beat up your friends for the entertainment of mindless drooling fans in this bloodthirsty miniatures combat Everway variant. We'll be sure to have Waves of Time CDs at our booth, too. For more info, surf on over to http://dragonflight.org/. August 18, 1999Thanks to the Pearl (Perl) School of Magic, we're proud to present Divining With the Fortune Deck by Jonathan Tweet (from the Guide to the Fortune Deck in the Everway boxed set) featuring an online Everway Fortune Reading. August 17, 1999Okay, enough already with the Waves of Time CD-ROM preorder madness--we're all set for real orders now! Waves of Time is now on the order form on this site, but the order form isn't secure yet (it probably will be soon, though!). If ordering unsecurely makes you nervous, just drop us a line at custserv@rubicongames.com, or call us at 206.621.9179 or toll-free in the U.S. and Canada at 1.877.994.4966 (1.877.99GIZMO). Our hordes of Mail Order Zombies are ready to ship to you, and they promise not to drool on your CD. August 5, 1999If you're in Milwaukee for GenCon, stop by the Pagan Publishing booth to pick up all of those Everway and Spherewalker products you've been meaning to get but never have. (And of course check out their killer products for Call of Cthulhu!) Unfortunately, we weren't able to ship them any Waves of Time CDs, but they've got everything else. April 2, 1999Okay, um, so please keep watching this space for our Big Announcement, as some little server sprites played a big ol' April Fool's joke on us yesterday, causing a delay in our secret project (codename: Gizmo). April 10, 1997We have been so busy lately, that we forgot to update The Latest! Shame on us! We have lots to report, so we'll try to keep each entry short. Here goes:We had a booth at the GAMA Trade Show in March, and received excellent responses from the retailers and distributors there. In fact: Spherewalker Sourcebook has been nominated for an Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Supplement of 1996!!! To quote from the review in Shadis #33: "No fantasy RPG product in the last decade has had a fraction of the wit, splendor and imagination that Spherewalker Sourcebook contains. It is a richly detailed, highly original piece of fantasy that no gamer should be without." So, what are you waiting for? Ask your retailer for your copy of Spherewalker Sourcebook! And while you are at it, get the cards, too! February 19, 1997At Rubicon Games' Annual Shareholders Meeting, Jesse McGatha announced his desire to step down as president of Rubicon Games in favor of Eric Sass, Rubicon's Vice President of Finance and corporate treasurer. The board of directors unanimously elected Mr. Sass as the company's new president. For more detail on this change, please read our Press Release. Here's the scoop on this change: this isn't some kind of unfriendly takeover, or an abdication of responsibility, or anything bad at all. In fact, this is just what we needed -- Eric is excited about being president, and Jesse is excited about having more time to devote to designing and writing Everway material. Everyone wins! February 18, 1997We are announcing the upcoming Everway product: Everway Hero Sheets. This new product includes 24 full-color hero sheets, 12 ready-to-run heroes, a map of the city of Everway, and a new quest entitled Thief of Storms: A Strangerside Tale. Now, you can get as many as you need! Order yours from your retailer today! January 12, 1997We have received lots of nice comments about Spherewalker Sourcebook. They look great -- Rich McGatha, Amy Weber, Jenny Scott, and everyone else did a fantastic job getting this project done right, and on time.Make sure to ask your retailers for Spherewalker Sourcebook. It is great for Everway, any other fantasy roleplaying game, or just to read straight through. Our new Web site went "live" today! It is a vast improvement over our old one, and will continue to improve over time. The goal is to provide a place for everyone who loves Everway (and our other forthcoming games) to gather and share information. We now know that it WILL be available in stores on Halloween.August 12th, 1996GenCon is over, and we have returned... Wow, that was tiring! It was also a lot of fun. We showed Everway to approximately 100,000 people (at least, it seemed like that many), almost all of whom loved it! I don't think Dr. Bob will EVER run another quest with dogs in it, but that's OK.Elfin Enterprises has agreed to represent Rubicon Games' products internationally. If anyone is having trouble getting Everway, the Companion Collector Cards, or the Spherewalker Source Cards outside the U.S. and Canada, please let your retailer know that Elfin has it. In addition, our master Web designer and all around great guy Dr. Robert Coury is driving to Milwaukee from New York to help us out. Dr. Bob is cool!August 2nd, 1996Wizards of the Coast signed the Everway contract today, so now it is really official: Rubicon Games, Inc. is the owner of Everway and all that goes with it. Just in time for GenCon, too! As part of the agreement, we will be able to use some of their booth space at GenCon, and they will sell the game for us through their cashiers. Thanks, Peter!July 19th, 1996We have finally completed negotiations and signed the Everway contract with Wizards of the Coast. As soon as they sign it, we will be the proud owners of the entire game line, including all intellectual property, all contracts, and all inventory.July 8th, 1996Rich and Brian just got back from the Origins convention in Columbus, Ohio. Interest in Everway was great, and sales were very good. We shared a booth with three other companies, so we had very limited space - it seemed to work out anyway.June 15th, 1996The Spherewalker Source Cards were officially released today. They are gorgeous! The larger distributors are carrying them, so retailers should be able to get the cards. If they can't, we will also sell them directly via mail-order.June 7th, 1996We finished remodeling the office today, and are ready to move in. It will be nice to have a central place to work and store our files - we have been working out of our various homes so far.Our company address remains the same: PO Box 2931, Seattle, WA, 98111-2931. Now that the letter is signed, we can concentrate on implementing our plan.May 10th, 1996Wizards of the Coast called us today, and asked us to bid again on Everway! Pagan Publishing had backed out of their agreement due to Everway's incompatibility with their company vision. It has been a long time since the original announcement of the sale of Everway (December 6th of last year), but we know we can make this work. This game is just too good to die such an early death.March 20th, 1996Several of us attended Norwescon, at the Red Lion near the Sea-Tac airport in Seattle.March 15th, 1996Well, we didn't get Everway. This is a fantastic roleplaying game. We really like the emphasis on the story and the roleplaying instead of improving your characters' statistics. We have been toying with several roleplaying game ideas; if we purchase Everway, we can jump right in to an existing system, and get some of this cool stuff out sooner! Let's hope they like our bid...January 10th, 1996Several teachers in the Seattle School District have been using The Die is Cast(tm) in their classrooms to teach math. They are really enthusiastic about this product as a teaching tool. We will definitely explore this market for this game, and our others.November 11th, 1995We just finished creating the first cut at a new game, called DC. This one is a collection of 15 classic and/or historical dice games, with the history of each game included with the rules. It will be produced with 12 dice (6 white and 6 red), 40 small poker chips (20 each of white and blue) and a drawstring bag for storage. Should be perfect for travel, boats, etc.October 16th, 1995A class of 3rd to 5th grade students at Pathfinder Elementary (Seattle Public Schools) has agreed to test UTC at lunch and at recess every day for the entire school year. They might like the game a little too much, but that's OK with us!October 8th, 1995The first draft of the rules for the social card game code-named UTC was completed this afternoon. Play-testing began immediately, and lasted long into the night... The game is fun, but still needs some work.September 15th, 1996We had an organizational meeting last night, and named several officers: Jesse McGatha is the President, and Michael Coffey, Ed Dirks, Brian Hess, Eric Sass, and Evan Sass are Vice Presidents.August 16th, 1995We incorporated our company in the state of Washington today.
